This multiple (an edition of 500) multiplies the possibilities for education in times when life and economy have to be reinvented, with contributions from artists: Simon Browne, Danilo Correale, Jason Dodge, nibia pastrana santiago, and Dilek Winchester and the late Allan Sekula (in collaboration with the artist’s estate). Once an idea for an exhibition — now a "box" that has learned from the pitfalls of exploitative economic logic in all aspects of society and politics, beginning with schooling — it holds manifold keys to the recovery of pleasure, curiosity, desire and intention for those who dare to open it up and use it fully. The title is borrowed from Allan Sekula’s photo-novel, School Is a Factory, which he made between 1978 and 1980 while working as an instructor at Orange Coast College, a community college in Costa Mesa, California. Sekula’s photo work is printed in full inside a 'text book' that also contains varied contributions from the project’s six curators: Thomas Butler, Sharmyn Cruz Rivera, Danai Giannoglou, Iris Ferrer, Naz Kocadere, Juan Fernando Lopez — all participants in de Appel’s Curatorial Programme 2019/2020.
